Class of 2023
I transferred to Studio Workshop from being mainly a 2D artist. Before this semester, I had not thrown on the wheel in around 2 years. Getting back into ceramics was a little challenging initially, but I soon got the hang of it. For these pieces, I created donut vases. Donut vases are vases with a hole in the center and are shaped like a regular donut shape. To create these vases, I first centered my clay then created an opening in the center and another crease on the outside of the center. I then pulled up the walls of the clay and folded them over to create the donut shape. I also hand-made one donut vase. I got coils of clay and molded them into a donut vase. I created donut vases because I had never created this type of vase before and I found them very visually appealing. I mixed two glazes together to create my final glaze color. I first tested this glaze color on a scrap piece of ceramic. This color reminded me of how I used to go to Wilmington North Carolina every summer with my family. The color of the water in Wilmington is very similar to the color of my glaze. I enjoyed this last semester of art in high school and I am so glad I was able to experience time creating on the wheel.
